Swāt written in Urdu and Pashto as “سوات” is district in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The valley is famous for its breath taking, beautiful sights and natural beauties in the shape of river, spring, mountains and Lakes.
During the visit of Queen Elizabeth II, she described it as the “Switzerland of the East”.

History and Culture
The history of swat is dated back to around 327 BC. Swat was called “Udyana” at the beginning and then the name was changed to Suvastu. In 327 BC, Alexander the Great fought his way to Odigram and Barikot.
The area was occupied by Buddhist in 2nd century BC. They were attracted by the peace and serenity of the land. The area was later conquered by Yousufzai tribe of Pashtuns. In 19 century the area was ruled by Saidu Baba. Who was a Muslim saint and a pious man also known as Akhund Sahib.
Area and Population
Swat is the 3rd largest district in KPK with a population of 2,309,570 people (2017 census). Swat covers an area of 5,337 km2 (2,061 sq mi).
The valley is inhabited mostly by Pashtuns (90.28%, while the upper region of the valley has Kohistani’s people (8.67%) in dominance.
Where is Swat and How to Locate it
Swat is located in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, Pakistan co-ordinates (35°23′N 72°11′E). The valley can easily be accessed by road. The distance from Peshawar to Swat is approximately 190 km and 270 km from Rawalpindi.
If using personnel vehicle it takes approx 2 hours from Peshawar to reach the valley. From Islamabad the journey can take 5 hours.
